Before Zarkon's rise to absolute power, Honerva was a revered scientist within Altean society, specializing in rift exploration. Her relationship with Zarkon began when they met during a joint expedition into the rift, and she later became his wife after his rise to power. She became Haggar, relegated to the role of an advisor while secretly conducting forbidden experiments in the depths of the Empire's core. The most significant result of these experiments was Lotor, a natural-born son of Zarkon and Honerva. This act was intended to create a vessel capable of controlling the lion force without the need for a team of paladins. However, Honerva's love for her child eventually conflicted with Zarkon's genocidal plans, driving her to manipulate events behind the scenes to protect him while maintaining appearances as an imperial villain. Her magic is unique within the universe, drawing from corrupted quintessence from the rift.
